Andy has over 15 years professional experience in the UK, West and East Africa, South-East Asia and Central America with extensive knowledge and practical experience in technical project management working with multi-disciplinary project teams and in donor relationship management.  As part of his current role at WSUP he is Chief of Party for the USAID funded programme ‘African Cities for the Future’ (ACF) involving capacity development of formal and informal service providers in six African cities  aimed at providing  scalable, sustainable and financially viable WASH services to poor urban communities.  He is Co-Creator of Clean Team Ghana Ltd, WSUP’s collaborative venture with Unilever to build a scalable business model for ‘sanitation as a service’ in low income areas of cities in developing countries.  The project has required specific contextual analysis to develop a solution that overcomes the barriers of land tenure, high capital costs of current options and expensive pit emptying services.  In Bangalore, India, Andy coordinated a project to scale-up improvements to manual pit-emptying services involving support to social entrepreneurs and the establishment of a micro-finance mechanism for the construction of household toilets.

Before joining WSUP, Andy qualified as a Chartered Civil Engineer whilst consulting with the Halcrow Group Ltd where he was a Team Leader for the Water and Environment Business Group for over 3 years.  He was also a Research Associate at Cranfield University undertaking DFID funded research into the regulation of water and sanitation services for the urban poor.  Previously he worked as a water and sanitation engineer in Guatemala conducting assessments and implementing projects in schools, and other rural and peri-urban settings. Prior to his work in Guatemala he was employed as a graduate structural engineer with Consulting Engineers Whitby, Bird and Partners engaging with the complete project  lifecycle for water infrastructure projects.

Before focusing his work in water and sanitation he gained early useful career experience in digital media marketing (web, mobile and TV) , business start -up  and in running a luxury mobile toilet business.
